What is Moxibustion and how does it work? Moxibustion (or moxa) is an ancient form of therapy. It is a painless treatment involving the burning of the herb mugwort (either rolled into sticks or made into tiny cones) near the body or on ointment or a slice of ginger. The gentle heat is so comfortable and soothing that many patients fall asleep during the treatment. Moxa is used to warm regions and specific acupuncture points to stimulate circulation through the points and inducing a smoother flow of blood and qi. It militates against cold and dampness in the body. The validity of moxa has been confirmed by many recent scientific studies. It has effects on the immune system, analgesia, the kidneys, colitis, ulcers, neurons, and gene expression. Moxibustion is often used in conjunction with acupuncture to stimulate the blood and energy flow of the affected areas. What diseases/disorders are treated with moxibustion? Moxa could add new energy to the body and could treat both excess and deficient conditions. It is especially effective in turning breech presentation, and in the treatment chronic problems, deficient conditions (weakness), gerontology and a variety of stress related illnesses such as: menstrual cramps, irregular periods, and infertility, post-menopause symptoms, pain caused by stress and tension, joint pains, arthritis, diarrhea, indigestion, stomach distension, low metabolism, low temperature, depression, insomnia, anxiety, fear, panic attacks, vertigo, hernia, cancer, cold bile disease, and neurological disorders, etc. Also, moxibustion treatment may help to flatten tummy and reduce wrinkles. Is moxa treatment safe? Moxa has been safely used for thousands of years in China. Direct moxa may burn the skin but which is rarely used today. The burning of the smoking type moxa produces a great deal of smoke and has a particular odour which can be replaced by smokeless moxa. Moxa is totally safe and without harmful side effects if it is carried out by an adequately trained TCM practitioner.
